About this course
The subject of Silviculture of Tropical Forest raises the history and development of silvicultural systems in the tropical countries in general and in Indonesia mainly; comparing all the silvicultural systems being applied in Indonesia up to now; the role of silviculture and silviculturists in maintaining forest and environmental functions, components of intensive silviculture (i.e. tree improvement, environmental manipulation, and integrated pest management) and cases of their application for sustainable forest development. Examples of integrative treatments applying its components are given for silviculture of tropical forest tree species such as teak, dipterocarp and pine (Pinus merkusii), agroforestry and of various habitats on land rehabilitation programs.
The learning is designed to foster student’s critical attitude in understanding the history and development of silvicultural systems in tropical countries, especially in Indonesia. Finishing this course, students will be able to explain and compare all the silvicultural systems being applied in Indonesia up to now. Students could also explain and analyze the role of silviculture and silviculturists in maintaining forest and environmental functions, and apply their knowledge in comparing and justifying the components of intensive silviculture (i.e. tree improvement, environmental manipulation, and integrated pest management) and their application for sustainable tropical forest development.
