How to Reach Yogyakarta

Airplane

To reach Yogyakarta by airplane, you will need to fly to the Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), located around 40 kilometers west of downtown Yogyakarta. Newly established in 2019, this is the main airport serving Yogyakarta for both international and domestic flights.

While Yogyakarta does not have a direct connection to many major international airports, you can find connecting flights. Most international flights to Yogyakarta usually connect through larger Indonesian airports, such as Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta, Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar, Bali or Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya.

Once you arrive at the Yogyakarta International Airport, you can easily get to downtown Yogyakarta by airport train, shuttle bus, or taxi (both conventional and ride-hailing apps like Gojek or Grab).

Airport Transfer from YIA to Yogyakarta

Here are several options available for airport transfer in Yogyakarta:

  • DAMRI Shuttle Bus: DAMRI is a state-owned enterprise providing bus services in Indonesia, offering official public transportation from YIA to Yogyakarta and vice versa. Equipped with comfortable armadas with experienced drivers, this service is available every hour in the airport, so you can easily book your seat as soon as you’re landed in Yogyakarta.
  • Airport Train: Provided by Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) under the name KAI Commuter Line, this airport train service offers a convenient and faster transfer from and to the airport, taking less than an hour. The train station is located inside the airport, connected to Wates Station and Yogyakarta Tugu Station. The ticket fare ranges from Rp20.000 to Rp50.000.
  • Taxi: For a more private and direct mode of transportation, you may opt for a taxi ride instead. You can choose conventional taxis lining up in front of the arrival gate at the airport, or order ride-hailing taxi services such as Gojek and Grab. The fare ranges from Rp200.000 to Rp300.000, depending on your destination.

Train

Java Island, in which Yogyakarta is located, is covered by an extensive and reliable network of railways, provided by Kereta Api Indonesia or Indonesian Railways. Trains to and from Yogyakarta typically cover major cities in Java, including Jakarta, Solo, Surabaya, and Bandung. A train ride from Jakarta to Yogyakarta typically takes about 8 to 9 hours.

There are wide options of train rides to choose from, each with its own excellent services. You can easily book your ticket through the KAI Access application, available from Play Store or App Store. The prices may vary, depending on the type or class of the train you desire.

When traveling to Yogyakarta, we recommend you to choose the Yogyakarta Station (also known as Tugu Station) as your final destination. Serving as the main train station in Yogyakarta, it is located right in the northern section of Malioboro, thus providing easy access for first-timers in the city.

Bus or Shuttle

If you want an inexpensive alternative for land transportation to reach Yogyakarta, you may opt for bus and shuttle services. While considerably cheaper, bus and shuttle rides tend to take much longer than trains, around 12 to 15 hours (depending on traffic conditions).

If you are traveling by bus from Jakarta, you can choose Cibubur, Kalideres, or Kampung Rambutan bus stations as your departure point. For arrival in Yogyakarta, you can choose one of these following bus station options: Giwangan, Jombor, or Prambanan.
